Parental Control Options
Parental Control Software
CyberSitter.com is award winning internet filter for Windows only.
One for all: Software
Netnany.com is recommended by Focus on the Family and Is highly recommended by experts for internet filtering (according to USA Today print version August 13, 2014). You can purchase licenses for all of your computers and devices. The disadvantages are that there are no categories for social networking sites or hate sites, it can get costly, and the Android and IOS apps are low rated as of the current update of this handbook. You can choose to only purchase PC licenses for Windows or Mac (recommended).
One for all: Your home network
www.OpenDNS.com/home-internet-security/perental-controls/ is recommended by the New York Times, PC World, Cafe Mom and is used by many US public schools. The advantages are it is customizable and Immediately takes effect on all on your home internet computers and devices using your home network, including those connected through wifi (Macs, PCs, IOS, Android, Xbox, Kindle, Nook, etc). The disadvantages are that the security level, or customizations you choose, will be the same for all users. You can block social networks for your child, but they will be blocked for yourself as well.
One for all: Web subscription
Pre-installed parental controls (no purchase or download needed)
Windows
If you own a Windows PC notebook or computer, and you or your spouse are familiar with the version you have on your PC (XP, Vista, windows 7, windows 8), then you can search Google or YouTube for how to set up parental controls for that version. The advantages are that you can set up an individual user account for each child, even on separate computers on your home network, with separate levels of internet parental controls and even limit online access to only during homework hours for a child user. The parents are a separate user and can have lower levels of restrictions (such as only blocking spam and explicit material). The disadvantages are that it will only effect the Windows computers and not other devices. Parents will need some computer knowledge to set up the administrator account where they will have control over all other accounts once they have set up them up. For best security, you will want to put thought and time into specific sites, programs and games you will chose for each child user, or which to block from their use.
Mac
Search Google or YouTube for how to set up parental controls on your Mac. The controls are similar to Windows and the pros and cons are comparable.
IOS device
You can set up an IOS device so that you control the restrictions that will stay with the device no matter where your child may be connected. Search Google or YouTube for how to set up restrictions on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch (or go to support.apple.com/en-us/HT201304). You can set up a password for yourself and restrict the IOS device from having access to the camera, Facetime, purchasing apps, location services, using the internet, or you can set ratings for internet use, music, movies, games, etc. It does not seem able to block categories, such as all social networking sites, or all chat-rooms. It is recommended to also use a parental control app.
Android
You can set up an Android device so that you control the restrictions that will stay with the device. Search Google or YouTube for how to set up restrictions on your specific device. The parental restrictions available will differ with individual devices, but should control access to the camera, Facetime, purchasing apps, location services, using the internet, music, movies, games, etc. It is recommended to also use a parental control app.
BlackBerry, Chromebook, Kindle Fire, Xbox, Playstation, Nintendo, Etc.
Search how to enable parental controls for each of these devices.
